The year of 2008, marked as one of the most important year. It is marking the fifth year of the Iraq War, and not to forget the Presidential Elections. Not only is this Election important and big but it’s going to be the Presidential elections with the Iraq War.
John McCain who is a veteran and prisoner of War knows the truth of war. Having a Military background he believes that the Iraq War will end in the year of 2013, five years from now. He believes that troops shouldn't be pulled out of the war but kept in Iraq until they are confident that the Iraqi's can stand on their own. Currently the Senator of Arizona also hopes to help the Iraqi people with their government, economy, and etc.
John McCain wants to level with Americans as well. Making sure that the ones who have been or are spouses of people who have gone to the Iraq War the time. Time to express the way they felt about the war. All in one he wants to help Iraq to become successful and become a peaceful country while paying attention to the ones who served in the War.

I think that it is a matter of perspective to decide that it is okay to spend hundreds of billions of dollars(soon to be a trillion)and thousands of human lives to endeavor at state & nation building in the Middle East, but not the right choice to spend that money on domestic development... Clearly, his, the former, is a "realist perspective", with the latter being "idealist". However, a shift in thinking as to what, in today's globalizing world, will elevate a country's status in the world could occur if massive domestic investment results in a more stable economy and better quality of life for its citizenry. The ability of a country to care for its own (health care, job creation, retirement, etc.) becomes increasingly important as information about these aspects of life within a nation-state become more readily available to the global population - Once you become aware that the grass is greener on the other side of the hill, if they also have a sign that tells you they used x fertilizer, x amount of water, etc., once you see that you're going to want to mimic those conditions, and domestic investment becomes the realism that military investment was previously.
McCain would probably point to the failures of Carter as a reason for why we should not make this endeavor in the future, but I would argue that the current ideas Obama has about fostering civic involvement and service as a means to deliver services is a new one, and has the "from the ground up" quality that has worked in urban planning in places like Portland, Oregon, and community organizing in places like Roxbury, MI.
I think that these arguments are relevant to discussions about the Iraq War because wars of choice, such as this one is, inherently raise questions about the value of war, and therefore the value of alternatives to war. Also, the decision to begin the Iraq War, and many other wars, seems to me to be largely a result of belief in the realist perspective we discussed in Monday's class.
